Who is the course aimed at?
This course is suitable for anyone in charge of a premises no matter how big or small the premises and regardless of the number of people present. This includes all employers, self-employed people and anyone else in control of a premises, such as landlords and letting agents.
The content
The course is divided into three accessible, easy-to-understand modules:
- Introduction to legionella – what is legionella, major UK causes of legionella, what are the symptoms of legionnaire’s disease, how is legionnaire’s disease contracted, infection chain, where can legionella bacteria be found, introduction to cooling towers.
- Legal responsibilities – management responsibilities, duty holders & responsible persons, training, risk assessment, site logbook, written scheme, implementing a control scheme, audit, residential properties.
- Managing legionella in engineered water systems – cold water storage tanks, hot water tanks, showers, TMV, scale, bib taps, dead legs, expansion vessels, flexible hoses, water sampling, thermal/chemical disinfection, mothballing, other risk systems.
Course aims
By the end of this course learners will:
- Understand where legionella bacteria comes from, how people develop legionnaires’ disease and how it affects their health.
- Understand their legal responsibilities when it comes to preventing and monitoring legionella.
- Have knowledge of the environments where legionella bacteria are commonly found.
- Understand the risk assessment process.
- Have an awareness of the control measures that can be used to reduce the risks from legionella.
- Understand the importance of continually monitoring, reviewing and updating the legionella control measures.
Assessment
The online assessment is taken at the end of each module. You will be asked 5 multiple choice questions in each module with a pass mark of 100% required to be successful. The answers are marked automatically so you will instantly know whether you have passed. If you don’t pass don’t worry as you can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.
