Day Cummins Limited is a well-established firm of Architects and Surveyors based in Cockermouth, Cumbria, on the edge of the English Lake District

The work

In 2013 Day Cummins was appointed by Cumbria County Council to manage a large-scale, year-long programme of asbestos management surveys at over 300 Cumbrian schools. The company selected Eton Environmental Group to undertake these surveys on its behalf.

Due to public perception of asbestos issues, we carried out these surveys out of school hours, either between 3pm and 10pm or on weekends or during the holidays. We set up a very efficient system so that schools were systematically contacted, pre-surveys questionnaires completed, dates for surveys established and completed and surveys submitted to Cumbria County Council.

As part of the survey programme we took and analysed samples of suspected asbestos and included the subsequent results in our asbestos survey report. Where necessary, in the case of suspect high risk material, samples were analysed and results determined within 24 hours.

As part of our work we were required to identify situations at schools where asbestos in a dangerous condition had to be remediated. There were around 70 remediation projects and we provided detailed specifications for each project; then advised Day Cummins on tender submissions from asbestos removal contractors, as well as providing ongoing advice as required.

During the asbestos remediation projects, we also provided air analysis attendance to the asbestos removal contractor by providing a dedicated team of analysts who carried out air reassurance tests, smoke tests and 4-stage air clearance tests on completion
